(The following text is applicable only if you are reading it on LiveJournal.)
I got a notification a couple of days ago that the paid time for this account is about to expire.
After heavy consideration, I have decided two things.
1) I am not going to renew this account's paid status.
2) I am not going to continue to crosspost fanfiction to this account.
It seems like every time I turn around, there's some new craziness going on at LJ (R88, etc.) that just makes it more and more obvious that our New Russian Overlords are actively anti-community and anti-fandom, and that bothers me. It also bothers me that they are sticking advertisements on everything they can possibly stick advertisements on, which means that when my account reverts to unpaid, they'll be sticking advertisements on my fanfic. I'm not okay with that.
Loyalty to LJ means nothing, and I have been extremely loyal - I have a permanent personal account, and this account has been paid by the year since 2006. That's over $300 (not including extra userpics, etc) of hard-earned money that I have paid to a company that actively despises me and wants me gone
Why should I therefore remain somewhere that I'm not wanted, and pay for the privilege?
So. As of now, I will no longer be crossposting any of my fanfiction to LiveJournal, and within the next few days I will be locking down the LJ version of this journal to private. All of my fic will continue to be publicly available at Dreamwidth.
I will continue to post fic notifications to LJ communities like castle_fic
until the rest of fandom wises up and moves as well (or is forcibly kicked out, which frankly I can see coming). But the fic itself will now be hosted solely on Dreamwidth (or, occasionally, ff.net).
If this causes you a problem, or for some strange reason leaves you unable to read and enjoy my fic, then I deeply apologize. Unfortunately, I'm not going to change my mind. I have to stand up for my principles in this situation, and that's what I intend to do.
I would like to extend an invitation to you. If you are reading this on LJ and have not tried DW, or have not tried it recently
, I invite you to come over. Give DW a try. I know that in some quarters it has a reputation for LJ-bashing; that's really quit. And DW is a wonderful, warm, welcoming (and lots of other nice w- words) place to be. It's a place that understands, respects and appreciates fandom in all its infinite varieties. Come and friend me there. My usernames are the same - xdawnfirex and xdawnfirex-fic. Give it a try. I think you might find it to be a happy, safe new home. I know that I have.
